Elden Ring patch 1.04 buffs magic and fixes Carian Retaliation

Colossal weapons have also been improved.

What you need to know

Since Elden Ring’s launch in late February, Bandai Namco and developer FromSoftware have released a variety of updates, patches, and hotfixes for the game to adjust the game’s balance and resolve bugs and glitches. Recently, the developers deployed patch 1.04, an update to Elden Ring that buffs various player weapons and magic spells while also fixing some critical issues.

Specifically, patch 1.04 includes attack speed buffs and recovery time decreases to colossal swords as well as other colossal weapons like greathammers and greataxes. This makes them more viable against bosses in Elden Ring that only have short windows of vulnerability between their attack chains, and it also makes colossal weapons harder to avoid in PvP engagements. The new update also significantly buffs nearly every sorcery and incantation spell in the game with reduced FP costs and decreased recovery times, making spells as a whole less risky and less expensive to cast. Spells that tend to leave the caster particularly exposed, such as Frozen Lightning Spear, have also been changed so that they’re much harder to interrupt.

The update also includes many bug fixes, with the biggest one being a fix for the infamous Carian Retaliation glitch. This particular bug was causing the Carian Retaliation Ash of War — a defensive ability that allows players to absorb incoming spells and then return fire with Carian glintblades — to deal a ridiculous amount of damage, one-shotting all but the tankiest of builds in PvP. On top of that, the bug also prevented players from being able to see the glintblades shoot towards them, which made them insanely difficult to try and dodge. Carian Retaliation now does the intended amount of damage and the glintblades it creates can now be seen properly.

Some other notable changes and fixes include a nerf to Madness buildup speed, a nerf to Madness recovery, and a fix for an issue that allowed players to trade unauthorized items with one another. The full patch notes for update 1.04 can be found below:
