Notepad++ Just Got an Update: Here’s What’s New

Your favorite text editor just got even better.

Notepad++ is a popular text editor for Windows, thanks to a pragmatic and robust design perfect for opening code files, browsing large amounts of text, and more. Several updates this year improved large file support and squashed bugs, and now another Notepad++ update has arrived this week with a bunch of fixes.

The latest Notepad++ version 8.5.5 is now available to download, but as you might expect from the minor version bump, it’s mostly a bug fix release. However, many changes are to solve regressions, patch bugs, and enhance the user experience. And considering this is one of the best free text editors around, any update is appreciated. There are 11 bug fixes and several feature fixes you’ll appreciate.

Perhaps the added history navigation commands are the most notable change in this otherwise minor release. You can quickly go to the next/prev change, clear the history, and more from the history settings menu. This is on top of several Windows 11 features that arrived back in March.

Notepad++ v8.5.5 also added an update to Scintilla 5.3.6 and Lexilla 5.2.6, added SHA-512 hash features, made it easier to find and replace files when a user gets “RegExpr is invalid,” and improved the “Add new document at startup” feature, to name a few.

As for fixes, you’ll notice several while scrolling through the Notepad++ version 8.5.5 changelog. Some of those include fixing menu tools that contain 2 SHA-256 items while using localization, fixing a Korean IME append file extension issue and project panel inaccuracies in the save dialog. Users that have experienced the clipboard history panel showing corrupted data will be happy to hear that it’s no longer an issue, and there’s a fix for those getting an error message while opening a file with ‘=’ at the end of the file name.

Sure, this might not be the most significant release ever with huge features to highlight, but it’s another example of why Notepad++ is one of the most popular options around. It’s consistently receiving small user experience tweaks and patches to ensure a solid experience. According to the developers, you can download the update to Notepad++ v8.5.5 now, but the auto-updater won’t push out alerts for another week or so.
