The Dell UltraSharp U4919DW is an ultrawide monitor that goes beyond what you’d normally see with this display format and takes it almost to the level of parody. What saves it from falling into that though is that it actually seems to work pretty damn well with how it renders whatever you want to throw at its screen.
Just how crazy is the design of the new UltraSharp U4919DW? Well, just look at the image at the top of this post and it becomes very clear. If you want to know the actual specs that accompany this crazy design, they consist of an absurdly unbalanced QHD resolution of 5120 x 1440 pixels. On the other hand, the display space of this huge PC monitor can also be split into a much more reasonable dual screen configuration in which its 49 inch screen is turned into two 27 inch displays with ordinary 16:9 view ratios. The uniform ratio of the whole display however sits at an amusingly abnormal 32:9.
The first thing that comes to mind with the above specs is obviously gaming. With this much immersive screen space, we could think of a whole pile of games that would make the U4919DW simply awesome for making a person feel like they fell right into them. However, this is where the rather odd weaknesses of the UltraSharp U4919DW from Dell come into play. Despite giving all the physical impression of being a really unique gaming monitor, it lacks just about every other feature that would make it so ideal for working with the latest and best GPUs and 4K HDR PC games.
The UltraSharp U4919DW lacks HDR, it’s limited to a 60Hz refresh rate despite its QHD resolution and there is no frame rate synch technology at all built into it, either for AMD or Nvidia graphics cards. Its color performance is good at 99% sRGB space coverage but this is nowhere near as noteworthy as its appearance.
In other words, awesomely gaming-oriented appearance aside, what this Dell UltraSharp is really aimed at is business and finance users. This is why its makers didn’t feel the need to pack it with too many of those serious visual enhancement goodies like HDR and high refresh rate, and this is also why its major feature is the screen splitting capacity we mentioned above. Basically, it’s built for people who want to examine and compare lots of data easily because they can easily split it between two separate displays, but with the convenience of having both right inside one single device.
Whatever you might think of the Dell UltraSharp U4919DW, it also happens to be on sale right now. Its price dropped down from a starting MSRP of $1,699 to a more reasonable $1,349. Thus, while you might want to stay away from this strange display animal if you’re a gamer, it’s an excellent data crunching option if your business is finance or accounting, to name just a couple examples.
