OnePlus 8 series may be revealed on April 15th without the OnePlus 8 Lite

The OnePlus 8 series has been on our radar since it first leaked all the way back in October. We’re expecting three devices to launch in the series: the OnePlus 8, OnePlus 8 Pro, and the OnePlus 8 Lite. We initially believed that all three devices will be announced at the same time next month, but we’re now hearing that the Lite model may be left out of the initial announcement.

Twitter leaker “Max J” says that the OnePlus 8 will be announced on April 15th, 2020, which lines up with the previous report from TechRadar. 9to5Google believes this date to be accurate, while twitter leaker Ishan Agarwal states that the Indian launch may happen a day earlier on April 14th, 2020. WinFuture is now reporting that OnePlus will only unveil the OnePlus 8 and OnePlus 8 Pro at this event, and not the Lite model. Apparently, the event was planned to happen during the middle of this month, but the COVID-19 situation forced OnePlus to push things back. We can expect this launch event to be held online given the public health concern with holding a physical launch event.

WinFuture goes on to claim that it could be several months after the April 15th launch before we see the OnePlus 8 Lite. OnePlus reportedly experienced some delays in the development of this product due to the coronavirus pandemic. This may have led OnePlus to delay the launch of the Lite model and to carry on with the standard OnePlus 8 and 8 Pro. We don’t know, however, when any of these devices will actually go on sale.

As a refresher, the OnePlus 8 Lite is rumored to have a 6.4-inch 90Hz display with a centered hole-punch display, triple rear cameras, and MediaTek’s Dimensity 1000 chipset. The OnePlus 8 is said to have a 6.6-inch 120Hz curved, left-sided hole-punch display, triple rear cameras, and the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 and 5G support. The OnePlus 8 Pro is rumored to have a QHD+ 120Hz left-sided hole-punch display, triple rear cameras, and the Snapdragon 865 and 5G capability as well. OnePlus recently said the company is going “all in” on 5G, but it’s unclear if that includes the Lite model. We expect either the OnePlus 8 or 8 Pro to have a Verizon-specific SKU with support for mmWave 5G connectivity. We also expect at least one of these devices to support wireless charging, even possibly at up to 30W with support for reverse wireless charging.
