The OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro were launched back in May 2019, and while we are still a month and half away from completing a year from that launch, reports suggest that the government is gearing up for a device announcement on April 15, 2020. While we wait for OnePlus to make an official announcement for the launch date, the company has shared alternative CMF experiments that it did on past smartphones.
OnePlus CEO Pete Lau shared on Twitter photographs of OnePlus smartphones that are a tad bit different from the phones that consumers could buy.
Pete Lau captioned the photos:
We do more testing with colors, materials, and finishing (“CMF”) than you could imagine, because that’s what decides the overall feel of a phone. We’ve got more to share soon, but until then, what’s your favorite out of these past devices?
OnePlus is no stranger to concept phones, as it recently showcased the OnePlus Concept One to enthusiasts around the world. The OnePlus Concept One primarily showed off the invisible camera technology, but it also set the ground for showing off an alternative CMF of leather with faux stitching for the rear panel. But with these CMF experiments, the core idea was to try out different colors, materials, and finishing firsthand on products that are intended to reach the mass market but may not be completely ready just yet.
In the pictures, we can see a few familiar faces in different avatars. There’s the regular OnePlus 7T, but also one with a marble finish sporting a camera design that was seen in one of the earliest leaks. Next, we see three different OnePlus 6‘s: one with a glossy white-and-cyan gradient, one with a matte white finish (different from the Silk White variant), and one with a denim blue color and rough gradient (but hard to determine from just images if its a wood-like finish). And then there’s the matte white OnePlus 5T Star Wars Edition, which is the second phone among the six pictured that customers could buy. It does appear that the company used some of the learnings from the white-and-cyan gradient phone to make the Thunder Purple OnePlus 6T.
We are close to the OnePlus 8 series launch, and this curious share by Mr. Lau does pique our interest. Will we see any of these CMF alternatives adopted for the upcoming phones? Guess we will have to wait to find out.
