T-Mobile Limiting High-Speed Data in Canada, Mexico to 5GB

Best T-Mobile Phones

Traveling to Canada or Mexico as a T-Mobile customer previously meant having unrestricted access to your high-speed 4G LTE data, just like you would at home. That’s thanks to the company’s Mobile Without Borders perk, which was implemented in 2015. But next month, the perk is being restricted somewhat.

Starting Nov. 12, T-Mobile will limit your 4G LTE data to 5GB per month while you’re in Canada or Mexico, the company has announced. After burning through 5GB, your speeds will drop to just 128kbps (or 256kbps if you have a T-Mobile One Plus plan).

“Mobile Without Borders is an incredible benefit and allows customers to stay connected when traveling in Canada and Mexico,” T-Mobile said. “In order to prevent usage beyond the intent of the product, we implemented a limit on the amount of monthly 4G LTE data.”

The company went on to say that “less than 1 percent of people with this benefit travel to Mexico and Canada use over 5GB a month.”

The change affects all customers on T-Mobile One, Simple Choice, and legacy rate plans. Check out the chart above to see how this will affect different plans.

T-Mobile customers can track their LTE usage in Canada and Mexico by dialing the short code #WEB# on their phone. The company will also send you an alert when you’ve used up 80 percent and 100 percent of your LTE data.

Note that you can get unlimited LTE in Mexico and Canada by adding One Plus International to your account, but at $25 a month, that option isn’t exactly cheap.
